Eric Bana will celebrate the release of Hulk in Australia with a massive party in his home city of Melbourne.

While Victorian VIPs will be treated to a spectacular, big-budget party staged by United International Pictures, Sydney fans will attend a low-key screening with Bana.

But Sydney's opening night crowd have no reason to gripe. The reason behind UIP's Melbourne choice is obvious: Bana grew up in the city and he's keen to celebrate with close family and friends when the film is launched in Australia.

The actor is in Morocco filming Troy, the epic blockbuster also starring Brad Pitt.

But he will head to Los Angeles for the premiere of Hulk on June 18 before visiting Australia, then Europe and the UK, during a whirlwind month of promotional duties.

"It's going to be quite an intense period for him," said Jon Anderson, national marketing manager for UIP.

"His contract for Troy included a clause which allowed for promotional duties for this film," he said.

Anderson revealed the Hulk premiere at Melbourne's Jam Factory on June 23 will feature body builders (painted green, of course) lining a bright green, not red, carpet.

In contrast, Sydney's screening will be followed by a quiet evening of cocktails at Arena Restaurant at Fox Studios.

But the Hulk himself will be there - Bana will be happily mingling with fans on June 22.
