Fest putting spotlight on visual f/x makers
By DAVID BLOOM

The people behind some of the year's biggest effects-driven and animated films will be in the spotlight during this weekend's Festival of Visual Effects, along with one of the genre's pioneering films now celebrating its 20th anniversary.

The festival, in its fifth year, is sponsored by the Visual Effects Society, whose event routinely draws top f/x supervisors and animators to talk about how they made their movies look so cool. Events run all day Friday through Sunday at the Los Angeles Film School at 6363 Sunset Blvd.

Saturday's sessions will feature f/x and animation supervisors from "Terminator 3," "Finding Nemo" and "The Hulk," with a screening of "The Hulk" at 9 p.m., a week after it debuted at No. 1 with $62.1 million in its opening weekend.

Tickets can be purchased through the Visual Effects Society, which is based in Santa Monica, or through its www.vesfestival.org Web site. The festival will next travel to Frankfurt, Germany, with a similar program, in late September.

The screening of the Hulk at 9 pm is now sold out, but tickets can still be purchased for the ILM presentation from 5-7 pm. Get your tickets now, I know that I'll be there!
